Gunn's Golden Rules: Life's Little Lessons for Making It WorkGunn's Golden Rules: Life's Little Lessons for Making It Work by Tim Gunn

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I had really high hopes for this book, but it's not wonderfully written, and for me the whole premise is flawed.

I found this to be an easy read, if a little vapid. Tim Gunn does have good points for keeping it classy, but there was one thing that really bugged me about this book. It's all about manners and how to live by his "golden rules" but I always thought that one big aspect of manners was, well, manners. As in don't gossip. Tim dishes about celebrities, usually using names, and I couldn't decide through the whole book if it was a case of name dropping (which never strikes me as well-bred) or pay back (also not well-bred) or if he was just using names because people are famous and stories will probably get spread about them anyway.

Maybe it's the fashion and tv industry, I don't know, but it bothered me. Heidi Klum may call him the "consummate gentleman" on the back of the book, but I have my doubts....

It was a fun book but it was sort of weird to keep getting all of these tips on how to behave from someone who was only too quick to talk about others bad behavior, which to me reflected poorly on him. Also, I felt like the book lacked his particular tone, which came through really well in his "Guide to Quality, Taste, and Style".
